Software Engineer/Programmer

Acrovirt is co-developing wearable devices and AI platform to integrate organic data from brain, body and spatial/temporal contexts to construct individualized virtual libraries that can be used to enhance predictions of decision making and performance in real time.  In our facility located at the Qualcomm Institute on the UCSD campus, our experiments assess the responses of subjects to stimuli by measuring EEG, ECG, voice and facial dynamics, which are combined with contextual data to create patented virtual human libraries.  The Acrovirt mission is to augment AI and enhance data analytics for commercial, entertainment, research, educational, and biomedical applications.


We are seeking a skilled and motivated software engineer/programmer who is eager to build a career in machine learning and artificial intelligence and is looking for stimulating, socially-relevant challenges.  You will join a of team of researchers and partners focusing on designing and implementing advanced brain-computer interface technology using state of the art techniques. Your research and development will help to advance and evolve new brain-based human-machine interfaces where neurotechnology is integrated into everyday life.


  • You will work with senior staff, partners and independently on developing, expanding and scaling cloud-based software for advanced brain-computer interfacing and biosignal processing.
  • You will write production-grade code to integrate neural, physiological and contextual data into desktop and cloud-based biosignal processing that will form the basis of human virtual library applications.
  • You will work with senior staff, partners and independently on the development and refinement of methods for applying ML to refine the predictive accuracy of virtual libraries.

Professional Requirements

  • 3+ years of programming experience, 2+ years in Python.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Applied Math, Computational Neuroscience or comparable discipline, with a concentration in either Neuroscience or Cognitive Neuroscience; Master’s degree preferred.
  • Must have excellent communication skills, ability to self-manage projects, and a desire to thrive in a fast-paced and challenging high-tech startup-like environment.
  • Professional, collaborative, positive, team-oriented mindset. 

Technical Requirements

  • Demonstrated expertise in machine learning in general and familiarity with best practices.
  • Understanding of deep learning theory, techniques and best practices.
  • Demonstrated algorithm development skills.
  • Familiarity with time-series analysis.
  • Excellent programming capabilities and good code hygiene (clean, documented code).
  • Excellent technical reasoning and problem-solving skills.
  • Familiarity with modern software development standards.
  • Willingness and ability to quickly learn new programming languages and platforms, as needed.
  • Preferred expertise in deploying production software with Amazon Web Services, or similar Cloud platforms (Azure, etc.), and various related products and workflows in a production environment (e.g., EC2, S3, ELB, Chef/Puppet, Vagrant, Docker).
  • Preferred prior experience with biomedical time series analysis, especially EEG.
